With an exterior design that has been fairly unchanged since its release in 1941, the Jeep Wrangler is one of the most iconic vehicles in the world. Building on the vehicle’s legendary history is the next generation model design, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL. Replacing the Wrangler JK, the Wrangler JL is a combination of off-road capability, authentic Jeep rugged design, open road freedom and exceptional innovative safety and advanced technology features.

The all-new 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL is available in two body styles, two-door and four-door, a few different trims and there are three different engine options. Two-door Wrangler modes are available in three trims, the Sport, Sport S and Rubicon. Four-door Wrangler models (also referred to as the Wrangler Unlimited) are available in four different trims – Sport, Sport S, Sahara and Rubicon.
Returning for the 2018 model year with some upgrades is the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine. Delivering 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, the Pentastar engine now features Engine Stop-Start (ESS) as standard equipment and that improves the vehicle’s fuel economy. Standard on all Wrangler models equipped with the 3.6L engine is the all-new six-speed transmission, and there is an optional eight-speed automatic transmission available as well.
New 2.0L Engine
Joining the Wrangler JL lineup is the all-new 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine. Available on select trims, this turbocharged engine was rated with best-in-class 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The all-new 2.0L engine is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and the engine also offers a brand new technology, eTorque Technology. Not only is the new eTorque Technology meant to improve fuel economy, but it is also intended to improve driver comfort during start/stop operations and launch performance.
3.0L EcoDiesel Engine
Available in 2019, the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine will be an option for the four-door Jeep models. The EcoDiesel engine is rated at 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque, which is a great amount of torque. The 3.0L EcoDiesel engine is also paired with Engine Stop-Start (ESS) and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The 2018 Jeep Wrangler brings a new light to the traditional Jeep design cues with sculptural aesthetics that are instantly recognizable. To honor the Jeep CJ, the design team upgraded the well-known seven-slot grille to show both of the outer grille slats converging with the headlights. LED forward turn signals are placed on the front of the wheel flares and now all Jeep Wranglers feature body-colored sport bars that are welded to the body and integrated grab handles.
Available on the Wrangler Sahara and Rubicon trims are LED headlamps and fog lamps that provide bright white light, which further adds to the Wrangler’s unique look. Both the Wrangler of those trims also feature daytime running lights that form a halo surrounding the perimeter of the headlights.
New Exterior Configurations
A big difference to the new Wrangler JL are the changes made to the doors, top and windshield combinations, which provide consumers with numerous amounts of configuration possibilities.
No matter which trim buyers choose, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL is designed with a go-anywhere 4×4 capability. While delivering exceptional off-roading capabilities, the all-new Jeep Wrangler offers two advanced 4×4 systems and a two-speed transfer case with full-time four-wheel drive – making its debut for the first time in Jeep History. A low-range gear ratio of 2.72:1 paired with a two-speed transfer case is featured on the Command-Trac 4×4 system that comes standard on the Sport and Sahara models. Standard on the Rubicon models is the Rock-Trac 4×4 system with a “4LO” ratio of 4:1 and Tru-Lok locking differentials. For towing power, the towing package can be purchased while delivering a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. According to FCA Media, every Wrangler model now offers an industry-leading approach angle of 44 degrees, breakover angle of 27.8 degrees, departure angle of 37 degrees and ground clearance of 10.9 inches.
The interior cabin of the 2018 Jeep Wrangler is designed with exceptional craftsmanship and comfort. An all-new center stack design is located on the dashboard and it houses a number of functional features such as climate and volume control knobs, media charging and connectivity ports. All of these features were designed to be easy-to-access and they are located in a close proximity to the front-seat passengers.
Additionally, vinyl-wrapped driver and front passenger door trim panels are among the list of new features along with lengthened arm rests for better comfort and the four-door Wrangler Sahara model has a hand-wrapped instrument panel that features a soft-touch surface with accent stitching. The arm rests also have new lift-assist handles for an integrated pull-cup design which allows drivers to remove the doors quicker and easier.
The Jeep Wrangler now offers three new Uconnect systems. Uconnect 5.0 is standard on the Wrangler Sport (base trim), which is an upgrade to the entertainment system that was standard on the Wrangler JK. Available on select Wrangler trims is the fourth-generation Uconnect 7.0 or 8.4-inch touchscreen that enhances the user interface and system performance with quicker start-ups. The touchscreen also features higher resolution display and graphics. Furthermore, the Uconnect 7.0 and 8.4NAV systems include Apple Carplay and Android Auto capabilities. A top-of-the-line sound system with subwoofer will be offered on select trims.
Safety Features and Warranty
According to Jeep, safety and security features were paramount in the development of the all-new 2018 Jeep Wrangler, which offers more than 75 available active and passive safety and security features. Some of the standard features include multistage advanced airbags, traction and stability control systems. Available features are Blind-spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path detection, and ParkView rear backup camera with dynamic gridlines.
All 2018 Jeep models are covered by a basic three-year/36,000-mile limited basic warranty, a five-year/60,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, roadside assistance for five years or 100,000 miles, and rust-through coverage for five years or 100,000 miles.
