The 2021 Jeep Cherokee is available in eight different trims — Latitude, Latitude Plus, Altitude, Latitude LUX, 80th Anniversary Edition, Limited, Trailhawk, and High Altitude — and comes with either a front-wheel drive or one of Jeep’s famed 4×4 systems. There’s a standard 2.4-liter inline-four engine, joined by an optional 3.2-liter V6, and a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder as well. All engines are mated to an automatic nine-speed transmission. As expected, the 2021 Jeep Cherokee is a solid drive that’s got plenty of off-road abilities all while juggling its role as a popular commuter vehicle. According to the EPA fuel efficiency numbers, it is the Cherokee powered by the turbocharged four-cylinder engine that offers the most efficient variant at 23 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.
The 2021 Jeep Cherokee doesn’t shy away from numerous off-road options. Active Drive I – a full-time 4×4 system that sends torque to all four wheels when conditions deem it necessary. It comes standard on the Latitude, Latitude Plus, Limited, Latitude LUX and Altitude trims. For the adventurous Jeepers out there, the top-tier 2021 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk and High Altitude trims offer Jeep’s Active Drive II – a 4×4 system that includes the active Drive I system with a low range and an additional neutral mode for added capability. Buyers also have numerous levels of towing capability thanks to the 3 available engines. The standard engine is rated to tow up to 2000 lbs, the turbocharged engine up to 4000 lbs, and the V6 up to 4500 lbs.
All 2021 Jeep Cherokee vehicles achieve uniformity, with some trims adding tow hooks and other aggressive exterior accents as the only variations. LED daytime running headlamps, high beams, fog lamps, heated exterior mirrors, solar control glass and automatic on/off headlamps are standard features with front-wheel drive. The impressive CommandView dual-pane panoramic sunroof is available on all trims but the Cherokee Latitude – the base trim. The Cherokee Limited and High Altitude trims get a little more luxurious with exterior mirrors complete with memory and turn signals.
The 2021 Jeep Cherokee borrows some of its interior design from the larger Grand Cherokee model. Not only is the cabin practical and comfortable, it also features an innovative dashboard that feels larger and more expensive than it is. The Jeep Cherokee 80th Anniversary Edition is based on the Latitude trim and includes 19-inch Crystal Granite wheels, leather upholstery with contrast stitching, a larger 8.4-inch touchscreen display, a panoramic sunroof, and power-adjustable front seats. Other high-tier trims, such as the Limited and Trailhawk, feature similar accents and perks.
Universally acknowledged as one of the best in the business, the Jeep Cherokee comes with the standard Uconnect infotainment system. A 7-inch touchscreen is standard, but there’s also an available larger 8.4-inch display as well. Starting with the Latitude Plus trim, every Cherokee comes with two USB ports for use by the rear-seat passengers. Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto capabilities are standard on every Cherokee vehicle and a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot is available, as are Amazon Alexa services. Audiophiles can enjoy an available Alpine Premium Audio System with a 506-watt amplifier, nine speakers, and an 8-inch subwoofer.
