Jeep Scrambler? It’s Looking a lot More Like Jeep Gladiator
Up until this point the highly-anticipated Jeep® pickup truck in the works has been referred to as the “Scrambler”, but it appears that the brand is going in another direction. According to the folks over at the Jeep Scrambler Forum, a section titled “2020 Jeep Gladiator” quickly appeared and subsequently disappeared from the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) media website. A long-time trusted source of the Scrambler forum claims to have visited the FCA media page in question both on his iPhone Safari browser and on Google Chrome, and thus, hopes among enthusiasts are running high. See the evidence for yourself below:
The Scrambler name dates back to the early 80s and was up until this point considered to be the name of the upcoming pickup as a nod to the CJ8 Scrambler that’s no longer in production. The Gladiator moniker isn’t new to the Jeep brand – it registers in the Jeep history book as a full-size Wagoneer-based pickup truck that was in production from 1962 – 1971. Additionally, in 2004, Jeep also used the Gladiator name for a Gladiator concept pickup truck. While the 2004 concept was a big hit with Jeep enthusiasts, the brand’s parent company at the time, DaimlerChrysler, did not pursue the concept any further. By 2007 DaimlerChrysler was no longer the parent company and the Gladiator truck concept became a thing of the past.
The Jeep Scrambler Forum members also managed to sneak a peek at an FCA presentation reserved for dealerships that confirm that the Scrambler/Gladiator will be unveiled on Nov. 28th (2018) at the Los Angeles Auto Show as many suspected. Included on the sole presentation slide seen, there are several specs like “15 class-exclusive innovations, next-gen advanced safety features and systems, real truck capability, and authentic Jeep design.”
Another source also revealed that there are going to be several trims of the pickup truck, most notably the Sport Pickup, the Overland Pickup, and a variant of the Rubicon lineup, a Rubicon pickup. This information is reportedly coming from a dealership order guide which includes new order codes for the Jeep Scrambler/Gladiator. FCA customarily does not comment on any ongoing projects, but with the LA Auto Show right around the corner, it’s not uncommon for these leaks to occur and generate hype.
Industry experts firmly believe that the name of the Gladiator (or Scrambler) is likely to be one of the only surprises as the pickup is expected to mirror the latest generation Wrangler JL. A few modifications will likely take place in order to accommodate a truck bed, however, the engine choices are believed to be the same 3.6-L Pentastar V6 and 2.0-L turbocharged inline four-cylinder that currently power the 2018 Wrangler. A state of the art UConnect infotainment system is listed on the dealership presentation as well. Check out some of the specs:
