Durango SRT is Powerful, But Not Enough to Beat Jeep

October 13th, 2017 by

Dodge has a new SUV, the Durango SRT, and it is giving Jeep’s performance SUVs, the Grand Cherokee SRT and the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, a run for their money. So, which SUV is better? That depends. All three SUVs have unique characteristics that make them ideal for various drivers.

Performance

The Durango SRT and the Grand Cherokee SRT are powered by the same 6.4-liter HEMI SRT V8 engine, which produces 475 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. While 475 horsepower is a lot, it’s a far cry from the 707 horsepower produced by the 6.2-liter V8 engine that is under the hood of the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk.

When it comes to track times, the Grand Cherokee SRT and Durango SRT are nearly neck-and-neck. The Grand Cherokee SRT accelerates from 0-60 mph in 4.3 seconds and finishes a quarter-mile in 12.8 seconds, and the Durango SRT accelerates from 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds and completes a quarter-mile in 12.9 seconds. But if the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is added to the mix, the Grand Cherokee SRT and Durango SRT are left in the dust. The Grand Cherokee Trackhawk accelerates from 0-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds and finishes a quarter-mile in 11.6 seconds.

Conclusion: Buyers that want the ultimate performance SUV, the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is the clear winner, but the Grand Cherokee SRT and Durango SRT are also solid options.

Towing

In comparison to performance cars, performance SUVs offer speed and towing capabilities, which makes them a great option for people who want the best of both worlds. The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT and Grand Cherokee Trackhawk have a towing capacity of 7,200 pounds and the Dodge Durango SRT has a towing capacity of 8,700 pounds.

Conclusion: Buyers that want maximum towing capabilities may prefer the Durango SRT.

Other Factors

All three SUVs have modern amenities and high-end interior features, like large touchscreens, advanced infotainment systems and leather seating. The Grand Cherokee SRT and Grand Cherokee Trackhawk are five passenger SUVs and in comparison to the Durango SRT, they are slightly smaller and their more compact size is ideal for some buyers. However, other buyers may prefer the Durango SRT for its seven passenger seating and slightly larger interior space.
