Jeep has a fairly big lineup today, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee will always be a classic. A blend of ruggedness, luxury, and capability, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is one SUV that stands out. It’s larger than the Jeep Cherokee making it the largest SUV on the lineup, so that just means more room and more to love.

The 2016 model year Jeep Grand Cherokee consists of ten trims, two of which are the special-edition 75th Anniversary Edition trims, and two SRT tuned models, the Grand Cherokee SRT and Grand Cherokee SRT Night. Here’s a closer look at the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Performance

Standard Pentastar Engine

Among the different trims, the Jeep Grand Cherokee lineup includes four engines. The standard engine on all but the SRT trims is the 293-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 24-valve VVT engine with electric start-stop technology and an eight-speed automatic transmission. It has a fuel economy of 19/26 mpg city/highway and a towing capacity of 6,200 pounds.

EcoDiesel Engine

For buyers looking for an improved fuel economy, there is the 3.0-liter V6 EcoDiesel engine, which delivers clean-diesel tech and lower CO2 emissions. The diesel engine produces 240 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, which gives the Grand Cherokee a Best-in-Class maximum towing capacity of up to 7,400 pounds and a Best-in-Class fuel economy of 22/30 mpg city/highway.

Large Engines

The final two engines available on the Jeep Grand Cherokee offer increased performance. One option is the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine and it produces 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. This engine also offers a Best-in-Class towing capacity of 7,400 pounds. The other performance engine is the SRT 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine. This engine generates 475 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque and accelerates from 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds.

Rugged Exterior

With reputation under the name, features such as automatic headlamps and Bi-xenon HID headlamps (select models only) are available on the Grand Cherokee. Same goes for halogen quad headlamps, LED tail lamps, and premium fog lamps. Basically, the Grand Cherokee has plenty of lighting when on the road. The deep tint sunscreen glass helps keep the cabin and its passengers cool, and the heated exterior mirrors offer visibility to the driver 24/7. Higher end trims come with ParkSense technology and a panoramic sunroof.

Luxurious, Comfortable Interior

The interior is not without its luxury, with heated front seats available in all trims but the base, Laredo, and heated second row-seats in all trims following the Limited. The front seats are also ventilated in the Overland, High Altitude, and Summit. For a little cargo space, the rear folding seat is a 60/40 split-fold across all trims, and dual-zone automatic temperature control is present as well to keep passengers comfortable at all times.

Entertainment

Uconnect, or a variation of it, comes standard in most of the trims, with upgradeable entertainment options. Depending on the trim, drivers will find themselves with either a 6-speaker or 9-speaker with subwoofer audio system, and either a 5-inch or 8.4-inch touchscreen display. The media hub has been integrated with Bluetooth voice command technology, and a rear seat video system is optional on all trims following the Limited.

Safety Features

Safety is key in all vehicles, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee, although massive, doesn’t skimp on the good stuff. Inside is an advanced multistage front airbag system, active head restraints, LATCH ready child seat anchors, a Sentry Key theft deterrent system, and more. The more high end trims have ParkSense and other safety systems, such as blind spot and cross path detection, and full speed collision warning. An advanced accident response system is available across all trims.

Warranty and Prices

All trims are covered under Jeep’s basic 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, roadside assistance for 5 years or 100,000 miles, and rust-through coverage for 5 years/100,000 miles.

The MSRP for the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee starts at $29,995. The high-end trim, the Summit, has a starting MSRP of $49,795 before upgrades.
