December 8th, 2017 by

The reveal that Jeep enthusiasts have been waiting for has finally arrived, the next generation 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL made its debut at the LA Auto Show. With so much press coming out as a result of the big reveal, where do we begin?

“Jeep has always represented the ultimate in capability and open-air freedom, and our all-new 2018 Wrangler protects that important legacy and takes it into the future,” said Mike Manley, Head of Jeep Brand – FCA Global.  “The all-new Wrangler is instantly recognizable as a Jeep, staying true to the original, yet it is better in every way – delivering even more rugged capability, more ride comfort, more fuel efficiency courtesy of several advanced powertrain options, more interior comfort, more safety and more technology.”

Engine Options

All-new 2.0L Turbocharged I-4 Engine

New to the Wrangler JL is the turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 engine that produces best-in-class 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. What puts this turbocharged engine at the top of its game is the ability for it to surpass the V6 engine offered in Wrangler and its eTorque technology. The all new eTorque technology not only improves fuel economy, but also launch performance and driver comfort during start/stop operations. Some additional features for the eTorque system include:

  • Auto stop/start
  • Electric power assist
  • Extended fuel shut-off
  • Intelligent battery charging
  • Regenerative braking

All-new 3.0L EcoDiesel Engine

Beginning in 2019, the 3.0L EcoDiesel engine will be an available option on the Wrangler JL. According to FCA media, the EcoDiesel engine is rated at 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque, with Engine Stop-Start (ESS) standard. A standard feature is the eight-speed transmission which is set to handle the increased amount of torque.

3.6L Pentastar V6 Engine

Making its return the 2018 Jeep Wrangler lineup is the 3.6-liter V6 engine – with some minor adjustments. It now offers Engine Stop-Start (ESS) as a standard feature which provides an extensive torque band while focusing on an essential trait required for those off-roading enthusiasts, the low-end torque. Standard on all Wrangler models is the new six-speed manual transmission with an optional eight-speed automatic transmission.

Interior Technology

Cabin

The all-new 2018 Jeep Wrangler’s interior combines authentic styling, versatility, comfort and intuitive feature use. Precision craftsmanship and high quality materials are found throughout the cabin. While staying true to the Jeep Wrangler’s rugged design, the center stack offers a clean, heritage-inspired design. In terms of Jeep’s huge range of capabilities and adaptabilities, the resigned center console is where the gear shift selection, transfer case and parking brake call home. A feature that’s also making its debut is the push-button start which has a water-proof protectant (new for 2018) located conveniently within the driver’s reach.

Exterior Design

According to FCA media, the all-new 2018 Jeep Wrangler builds on a sculptural design aesthetic that is immediately recognizable with its traditional Jeep design cues. Moreover, the Wrangler’s new exterior design is bold and rugged with a wide stance and lowered beltline with larger windows for better outward visibility, especially out on the trails, says FCA.

The Sahara and Rubicon models offer drivers clean white LED headlights that further add to the Jeep’s rugged and unique look. Beginning in 2019, Rubicon models will offer buyers a half-door configuration – the possibilities are really endless. Another new and improved feature is the Windshield. In order to provide drivers with better aerodynamics and a quicker fold down, the windshield rack features a new four bolt design. The A-pillars connect to the new header bar to keep the windshield secured in place while it’s folded down.

Entertainment

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL is an entire series of “firsts.” For the first time, the Wrangler JL is equipped with new fourth-generation Uconnect systems. The new Uconnect systems deliver communication, entertainment and navigation features drivers and passengers desire, including a full-color LED instrument cluster. The available Uconnect 7.0 and 8.4NAV systems come equipped with an upgraded Apple CarPlay and Android features.

Safety Features

The all new Jeep Wrangler JL is available with more than 75 advanced safety and security features. Some of great importance during manufacturing, available features include:

  • Blind-spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path detection
  • ParkView rear backup Camera with dynamic gridlines
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with electronic roll mitigation
