Green Car Journal named the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe its Green 4×4 of the Year. The leading industry publication named its winners at this month’s (November 2022) annual San Antonio Auto & Truck Show in San Antonio, Texas. Jeep’s electrified plans are part of Stellantis’ (parent company) Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan that hopes to see the automaker add more efficient propulsion systems. Stellantis hopes to cut its global emission footprint by 50 percent come 2030 and to lead the transportation industry by getting to net carbon-zero emissions by 2038.

The first of its kind to offer a plug-in hybrid powertrain, the Grand Cherokee 4xe is a cornerstone in Jeep’s electrified development on its mission to zero emissions. Jeep wants to expand its lineup with more unprecedented performance, environmental friendliness, and fuel economy.

“The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe does an exceptional job of meeting the needs of a wide range of buyers today. Its 2023 Green 4×4 of the Year title is well earned, not only due to its considerable trail capabilities and ability to drive 25 miles on battery power alone but also because of the sophisticated and satisfying driving experience it brings to the mission of navigating everyday life,” says Ron Cogan, Editor, and Publisher of Green Car Journal and GreenCarJournal.com

Offering buyers up to 25 miles of all-electric range, the 2023 Grand Cherokee 4xe is powered by a plug-in hybrid system composed of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine paired with two electric motors. A high-voltage battery pack and an eight-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission give the 2023 Grand Cherokee 4xe ots 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, with 0-60 mph figures in just 6 seconds and a max towing of 6,000 pounds. Thanks to its standard two-speed transfer case, the Grand Cherokee 4xe leads the segment in 4×4 capability. Buyers who opt for the Quadra-Lift air suspension can enjoy up to 10.9 inches of ground clearance and up to 24 inches of water fording capacity.

Green Car Journal editors take into consideration all models in the U.S. market, weighing individual environmental attributes alongside more conventional criteria of what makes a good vehicle. Capability, versatility, value, style, and safety are all considered when selecting a winner.

Fun, freedom, and adventure are synonymous with Jeep, and the Grand Cherokee 4xe is no exception. Unprecedented performance and environmental friendliness is also par for the course on this hybrid model as Jeep breaks new ground. Buyers can expect 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, as well as Jeep’s Quadra Trac II 4×4 system, 6,000 lbs of towing capacity, blue tow hooks and water fording capability up to 24 inches. Besides the Trailhawk trim, which includes all the bells and whistles, Jeep also offers an available High Altitude Package which includes 21-inch Gloss Black aluminum wheels, roof rails, Gloss Black accents and badging, and a unique seven-slot grille that adds panache to the Summit and Summit Reserve 4xe trims.
