Both the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee and (three-row) Jeep Grand Cherokee L, have earned the prestigious TOP SAFETY PICK+ accolade from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This distinction represents the highest rating granted by the IIHS and encompasses the 2023 Grand Cherokee SUVs manufactured beginning March of this year (2023), as well as 2023 Grand Cherokee L SUVs built post-May (2023).

“Achieving the highest possible safety rating from the IIHS is consistent with the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s place as the most awarded SUV in history. The Jeep Grand Cherokee’s singular blend of safety technology and extreme-condition 4×4 capability affords our customers the level of driving confidence they deserve. And with the appeal of two- and three-row versions, that driving confidence is available to a wider customer demographic,” says Jim Morrison, senior vice president and head of Jeep brand North America.

The 2023 Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L each earned a “good” rating–the highest possible rating – in the four crashworthiness tests required to earn TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation:

  • Small overlap front – driver-side
  • Small overlap front – passenger-side
  • Moderate overlap front – original test
  • Side impact – updated test

Included in the 2023 Grand Cherokee lineup is the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) technology, referred to by Jeep as Full-Speed Collision Warning with Active Braking and Pedestrian/Cyclist Detection. This advanced system’s assortment of cameras and sensors effectively meets the IIHS’s criteria for both daytime and nighttime operations, a prerequisite for earning the esteemed TOP SAFETY PICK+ distinction. Should the system identify a pedestrian or cyclist and determine an imminent frontal collision, it will, in the absence of driver response, automatically engage the vehicle’s brakes. Under specific circumstances, the system does have the ability to bring the vehicle to a complete halt as well.

The 2023 Grand Cherokee lineup extends even more safety to its customers via a selection of over 110 available safety and security features, including Intersection Collision Assist and Drowsy Driver Detection. The former functionality aids in identifying vehicles approaching from both the driver’s left and right as the vehicle approaches an intersection. Should an impending collision be detected, the system issues both audible and visual alerts. In the event of driver non-response, the system  autonomously engages the vehicle’s brakes. As for Drowsy Driver Detection, it monitors driving behavior patterns that align with signs of driver drowsiness, such as drifting out of lane. Upon reaching specific thresholds, the system reacts by issuing audio and/or visual advisories, prompting the driver to pull over.

“At Jeep, we are not content to rest on our laurels as the pre-eminent SUV brand. Whenever possible, we seek to leverage advanced technology to enhance the ownership experience of our customers,” Morrison added.
