Buyers in search of a three-row SUV have a lot of options these days, and that includes full-size vehicles without poor gas mileage. Two of the best SUVs in this segment are the Grand Cherokee L and Kia Telluride. The Grand Cherokee L is a stretched version of the renowned Grand Cherokee model.

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

Jeep invented the modern midsize SUV when it debuted the Grand Cherokee. The iconic SUV has remained one of America’s best-selling models for over 25 years, with reason. For 2023, Jeep offers the Jeep Grand Cherokee L with all of the perks of the lauded Grand Cherokee with an additional third row of seating. The 2023 Grand Cherokee L has a starting MSRP of $43,530 (plus destination fee).

Beneath the hood lies a standard V6 engine, just like in the Telluride, thus making both models quite close in performance. However, Jeep does offer buyers a 375-horsepower V8 engine as an upgrade. It’s the perfect choice for drivers who want a little more grunt from their three-row SUV. When properly equipped, the Kia Telluride’s towing capacity taps out at 5,500 pounds. The Grand Cherokee L, on the other hand, can tow all that and more without breaking a sweat. The model’s towing capacity maxes out at 7,200 pounds. Buyers who also want to regularly pull a boat or camper will be pleased with the Grand Cherokee L as it’s bound to have an easier time of the task.

When it comes to off-roaring, the Grand Cherokee L is the model to beat. While Kia offers two off-road oriented trims on the Telluride model, none come close to the most trail-capable Grand Cherokee L. Equipped with Jeep’s Quadra-Drive II 4-wheel-drive system, the Grand Cherokee L can take on even the most rugged terrain. Having an electronic limited-slip differential, as well as real skid plates, certainly helps. While both off-road Telluride trims can handle themselves on the trail, neither comes close to matching Jeep’s proven off-road reputation.

2023 Kia Telluride

The 2023 Kia Telluride is one of the more popular three-row SUVs. Some of its high points include a strong V6 engine, a roomy interior, and many other features. With a starting MSRP of $35,690 (plus destination fee, this is the only category in which the Kia Telluride bests the Grand Cherokee L. That said, Kia does not offer a second engine option, nor does it offer state-of-the-art 4×4 systems like Jeep does. Other standard features on the base trim Kia Telluride include Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto capability, a rear-occupant alert safety system, one-touch sliding and folding rear seats, and other niceties.

Both the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L and Kia Telluride come standard with a V6 engine and are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, both models come in numerous off-road-oriented trims and are some of the best looking SUVs in the three-row SUV segment. However, only Jeep elevates the three-row SUV to new heights as it does what it does best—provide excellent off-road performance with exceptional luxury features for buyers looking to add packages to their vehicle of purchase. Buyers who are going to spend a lot of time both on- and off-road should look no further than the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L.
