October 23rd, 2019 by

AM General, a leading manufacturer of light tactical vehicles, has joined forces with the Jeep brand. Together, the brands introduced a new light tactical concept vehicle based on the all-new 2020 Jeep Gladiator. AM General and Jeep introduced the Jeep Gladiator Extreme Military-Grade Truck (XMT) at the Annual Meeting and Exposition of the Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA). The two brands can trace their lineage and history together back to World War II. To create the Gladiator XMT, AM General relied on the Gladiator’s existing class-leading capabilities while customizing the truck to meet customers’ needs for a lightweight military truck.

“We are extremely excited to partner with FCA and introduce the Jeep Gladiator Extreme Military-Grade Truck at AUSA. this new venture gives us an opportunity to showcase our expertise in tactical vehicles and help Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) maximize the Gladiator’s global reach and potentially enter new military markets,” said AM General President and CEO Andy Hove.

With its 7.650 pounds of towing capacity and up to 1,600 pounds of payload capacity, the all-new 2020 Gladiator is touted as the most capable midsize truck ever. AM General recognized the Gladiator’s potential and sought it out as the ideal platform to develop its Extreme Military-Grade concept vehicle.

“The Jeep brand has an important military heritage, so we couldn’t be happier that AM General expressed interest in creating the Gladiator XMT. The all-new Jeep Gladiator boasts unmatched functionality, versatility and especially capability, including two advanced 4×4 systems, locking differentials, skid plates, tow hooks, and incredible, breakover and departure angles — the perfect foundation for this ultra-capable military concept vehicle. We’re proud to partner with AM General, we look forward to gauging interest and gathering feedback on the Jeep Gladiator XMT, and we’re excited about potential future opportunities,” said Jim Morrison, Head of Jeep Brand – North America.

AM General relied on its more than 100 years of experience when it came to identifying parts and accessories that would complement the Jeep Gladiator’s off-road maneuverability while enhancing its capability to provide appropriate tools and equipment for tactical communications and other services. AM General upfitted the Gladiator XMT with custom-built (and commercially-available) military-grade parts that created an even more rugged truck. The Gladiator XMT can traverse the toughest of terrains no matter the conditions, and was designed to meet varied military customer needs. Production will depend on feedback and interest in the military marketplace, but could begin as soon as the second quarter of 2020.
