Chrysler to Take on Tesla During EV Transition

Tesla is an undeniable leader in the EV segment, but its glory days as the only EV manufacturer are coming to a close as more and more traditional automakers, like Chrysler for example, make the electrification switch. Chrysler’s CEO Chris Feuell believes the automaker has what it takes to dethrone the EV pioneer. With its rich automotive history, Chrysler is used to playing a pivotal role alongside Ford and GM. As rising gas costs change the automotive landscape, electrification will play a pivotal role if these brands are to survive the near future. In 2021, Chrysler became a subsidiary of Stellantis–a parent company which also houses other conventional automotive sister brands such as Jeep, Ram, and Dodge. With the new venture came new challenges and Chrysler was granted a decade to regain its share in the automotive segment.
While all automakers find themselves under the strain of the overall electrification transition, Tesla looms in the background, so how does Chrysler plan to take on the reigning king of EVs? Chrysler revealed its electrification plans early in 2022, giving enthusiasts a glimpse into its future with the all-new Airflow concept and its vow to have a fully-electric lineup by 2028. The Airflow concept is indicative of Chrysler’s future, offering advanced features such as level 3 autonomous driving, groundbreaking digital technology, and a powerful range which exceeds 400 miles on a single charge.
“Everyone’s going after Tesla. But I think Chrysler is the one brand in the portfolio that has the capability to do that, because we’ll be hyper-focused on just a BEV offering, the design themes, and we saw a little bit of it when you saw the Airflow design. It’s very aero and contemporary with thoughtfully appointed technology that helps make the driving experience easier, better and safer. And I think that we’ve got a real shot at taking on Tesla,” said Feuell.
Chrysler, now under the Stellantis umbrella, can enjoy a headstart when it comes to electrification thanks to all the shared technologies with other brands. Getting its footing should not be as complicated as it could’ve been in the past given that other brands already offer EVs and are poised to share the same platforms and other technologies. Nearly every automaker out there is trying to outpace Tesla, hoping to not only transition to fully electric lineups, but to also catch up to their sales figures.
Chrysler Airflow
According to Chrysler, the entry-level Airflow will come equipped with a single motor, offering 201 horsepower, versus the double-motor-powered Airflow which will double the model’s horsepower. Additionally, the double-motor Airflow will also feature all-wheel drive to the tune of 400+ horsepower. The chassis is rumored to be equipped with a 119 kWh flat battery that allows for up to 400 miles of range on just a single charge, putting the Airflow right at the top with the very best all-electric vehicles. Other performance figures remain relatively unknown for now, but all-wheel drive Airflow vehicles should accelerate from 0-60 mph in just six seconds. A 15-20 kW standard charger will come as standard equipment, but Chrysler will more than likely offer a fast charger option much like other automakers.
