Closer Look at the 2016 Jeep Cherokee
The Jeep Cherokee has been a staple on the Jeep lineup for a few decades, and in 2016 the Cherokee lineup is stronger than ever. With nine trims, the Cherokee lineup includes the base Cherokee Sport and the special off-roading trim, the Cherokee Trailhawk, and a special luxury trim, the Cherokee Overland. Here are some basic details about the lineup and special Jeep Cherokee trims.
Engine and Fuel Economy
So what’s powering the 2016 Jeep Cherokee? A 2.4-liter I4 MultiAir engine is standard on all of the Cherokee trims. A 2.4-liter I4 PZEV M-Air engine and a 3.2-liter V6 24-valve VVT engine with electric stop/start as options, but the latter is standard on the Cherokee Overland 4×4. When equipped with the 2.4-liter I4 MultiAir and two-wheel drive, the Jeep Cherokee has a fuel economy of 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The 3.2-liter V6 gives the Cherokee Overland 4×4 an average fuel economy of 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.
Interior and Exterior
The interior of the Jeep Cherokee is definitely sophisticated. Available options include personalized instrument cluster, Keyless Enter ‘n Go engine starter, and steering wheel mounted controls and the Uconnect 8.4 with a built-in navigation system. Whether switching up seating arrangements or carrying cargo, there are multiple set ups for storage options. The second-row has a 60/40 split fold, and the front passenger is a fold-flat seat. There are also storage spots in the Jeep brand cargo management system, in-seat storage, and a full-length floor console, a new feature popping up in vehicles today.
The Cherokee’s body design is sleek and stylish, built with aerodynamics in mind. Though sleek, the Cherokee is built for on and off-road driving, so it is durable as well. The CommandView dual-pane panoramic sunroof is an available option on five of the Cherokee trims and it’s a standard feature on the Cherokee 75th Anniversary Edition.
Three innovative 4×4 systems are available on the Jeep Cherokee – Jeep Active Drive II 4×4 for rock crawling, the single-speed Jeep Active Drive I 4×4 with superb traction control for driving in any weather condition, and the Trailhawk’s Trail Rated Jeep Active Drive Lock 4×4 system with 4-Low and a rear locker.
“Selec-Terrain all-weather warrior” is the name Jeep has given to the Cherokee Trailhawk. With Selec-Terrain traction control, with Auto, Snow, Sport, Sand/Mud and Rock modes available, it sounds well-earned.
2016 Jeep Cherokee Overland
The 2016 Jeep Cherokee is the most high-end trim of the nine, and it’s got some key features that make it stand out from other nice SUVs on the market. The Jeep Cherokee rides on 18-inch polished wheels, and it features Uconnect 8.4 with 3D navigation and a nine-speaker premium audio system. The front two seats are ventilated, and all of the seats are heated and trimmed in Nappa leather. There are also select features that earned it an award-winning interior, such as a leather-wrapped instrument panel, and Jeep’s Active Drive II 4×4 system for class-leading 4×4 capability. Oh, and the Jeep Cherokee Overland is available in five exterior colors and has a starting MSRP of $34,695.
Safety and Security
The 2016 Jeep Cherokee has all the necessities of safety, over 70, in fact. On select trims, one can find preventative safety tech like Parallel and Perpendicular Park Assist, ParkSense Front/Rear Park Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path Detection, LaneSense Lane Departure Warning, and Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go. The Cherokee also has the option of forward collision warning-plus, automatic headlamps, and a ParkView Rear Back-up Camera.
