Coming Soon to the Jeep Lineup: A Three-row SUV
Mike Manley, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) CEO, recently confirmed the rumor that a three-row SUV programmed to slot between the next-generation Grand Cherokee and the upcoming Wagoneer is currently in production. Jeep is currently working on filling every niche in the large vehicle segment, an effort that will see their lineup expand dramatically when all three new models make their official debuts. Here’s what we know about the upcoming three-row Jeep SUV.
In an interview with Britain’s Auto Express, Manley stated “We’ve made some announcements for investments in our U.S. plants, which are really important for us because that brings two additional products to our Jeep portfolio, segments that frankly I’ve wanted to be in for a long time. One is the large SUV segments. There are relatively few competitors in there, but it could be a great segment for Jeep and we’ll bring back the Grand Wagoneer at that time. Then the second three-row Jeep, which will technically play in the same segment as the Grand Cherokee. Roughly 60 percent of that segment is three-row, so the Grand Cherokee has really only played in 40 percent. That will open up that part of the segment for us.”
Manley additionally stated that more than half of the vehicles currently in the Grand Cherokee’s segment offer third-row seating. The lack of third-row seating in the Grand Cherokee indicates that Jeep has been catering to the minority when we think of it how in demand third-row seating is nowadays. Adding a vehicle with a third-row to its lineup will help the Jeep brand capture even more of this ever-changing automotive market.
The other three-row SUV in the works for Jeep that’ll coexist alongside the Grand Cherokee will likely share a base platform with the brand’s flagship SUV, but no official name has been announced yet by the folks at FCA. No specs other than the third row have been made public either – Jeep wishes to keep their core formulas that have made them a success for decades a secret. “We’ll have the choice of Grand Cherokee or a different model. For me, the Grand Cherokee is such an icon, so that’s why I talk about the new model three-row Jeep,” Manley added.
The forthcoming three-row SUV, much like the Grand Cherokee and the rest of the Jeep lineup, will feature a plug-in hybrid variant in the near future as well. According to the automaker’s five-year plan announced in the Summer of 2018, by 2022 each and every single vehicle in the Jeep lineup will offer a plug-in hybrid variant and in some cases and all-electric drivetrain as well. Jeep is devoting millions of dollars into the development of electrification. This highly-anticipated three-row SUV from Jeep will be making its debut sometime in 2019 as major events such as the New York Auto Show and the Los Angeles Auto Show both still on the docket.
