Comparing Jeep Cherokee and Mazda’s CX-5
SUVs and pickup trucks are dominating the streets in the suburbs of America; you can barely escape one as your crossing the street. The influx of SUVs and pickup trucks amasses around 70% of the new vehicle sales in the United States. Here’s how the Jeep Cherokee and Mazda CX-5 compare in the performance and interior category.
The 2019 Jeep Cherokee comes with a 180-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and a nine-speed automatic transmission; there is an optional 2.0-liter inline-four turbo, as well. If buyers are looking for more towing capacity, they should look into the optional 3.2-liter V6. The Cherokee handling provides a sense of stability whether on the open road or around town.
When thinking about off-roading, it is best to look at the Cherokee Trailhawk. The Trailhawk is connected to a Selec-Terrain Traction Management System which allows the driver to choose from four choices: Auto, Snow, Sport, Sand/Mud, and Rock. Jeep also offers Lane-Keep assist and adaptive cruise control.
As for the Mazda, the CX-5 has a standard 187-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. Mazda also offers a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine which produces 227 horsepower when fueled with regular gasoline, and with premium gas, it increased to 250 horsepower.
The Jeep Cherokee seats five passengers comfortably in two rows. The front row has plenty of space and the rear seats have sufficient legroom for tall people. What more is there?
The Cherokee Cargo Space, for 2019, expanded by 3 cubic feet to 25.8 cubic feet. The Cherokee has a storage compartment that is under the cargo floor allowing for additional items to be discreetly stored. Talk about having extra space.
The Cherokee’s infotainment system comes with a standard 7-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The infotainment system on the Jeep Cherokee can be upgraded to an 8.4-inch touch screen. There is also a navigation and satellite radio which are available.
The CX-5 also seats five passengers. The front row is comfortable. It offers a decent amount of space for its passengers.
For cargo space, the CX-5 has 30.9 cubic feet of cargo space when the rear seats are up and when the seats are folded it offers 59.6 cubic feet of space. The CX-5 has enough storage space to accommodate an expanding family or having more passengers in the vehicle. The CX-5 also has an available power liftgate.
The infotainment for the CX-5 has a standard 7-inch touch screen, voice command, two USB ports, HD Radio and four speakers. As for the available features, there are two additional USB ports, satellite radio, six speakers, a 10-speaker Bose premium audio system and navigation. For 2019, Mazda added Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as an option.
The infotainment system, which comes standard, is the touchscreen capability that disables while driving. There is a rotary knob that is near the gear selector. The rotary knob makes the selection of navigating the infotainment screen and moves to different selections or icons easy to use.
