The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and the 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe SE are two popular midsize SUVs that are currently on the market. While both are in the same class, they each have unique characteristics and traits that help distinguish these models from one another.  

Engine Specifications

The two-wheel drive Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo SE is equipped with a standard 3.6-liter 24 valve VVT engine that generates 295-horsepower.  This powertrain is managed by an eight-speed automatic paddle-shift automatic transmission and has a maximum towing capacity of 6,200 pounds.

The 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport uses Hyundai’s standard GDI 2.4-liter six-cylinder engine that produces 290-horsepower. The transmission is a six-speed automatic with Hyundai’s Shiftronic. The Santa Fe has a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo is more fuel efficient than the Santa Fe SE. The EPA fuel economy rating for the Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4×2 is 22 MPG city and 30 MPG highway and the 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport has an EPA rating of 18 MPG city and 25 MPG highway.

Interior Features

The Jeep’s interior upholstery is cloth. Available technology in the Grand Cherokee Laredo includes Uconnect 5.0, a system that includes Bluetooth connectivity and select modes of entertainment. The dash has a 5” touchscreen display. A six-speaker sound system is available, through a state-of-the-art Harmon-Kardon multi-channel surround sound system with 19 high-efficiency loudspeakers is optional.

The Hyundai Santa Fe Sport comes standard with premium cloth seats and the front two seats are heated.  Technology in the Hyundai Santa Fe includes a standard 4.3” touchscreen to manage entertainment, navigation and communication.  Bluetooth is also standard on the Santa Fe to facilitate hands-free calling.


The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4×2 comes with an MSRP of $23,395, the similarly equipped Hyundai Santa Fe Sport has a base price of $24,950.


All Jeep’s have a three-year or 36,000-mile basic warranty, and a powertrain warranty and roadside assistance for 100,000 miles or 5 years.  Hyundai’s are backed with a 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty and  5-year or 60,000-mile basic warranty and five years of unlimited roadside assistance.
