Five Things to Know About the Jeep Wrangler EcoDiesel

May 6th, 2020 by

This isn’t the first time Jeep borrows an idea from a corporate sister company, but the 2020 Jeep Wrangler model is borrowing a refined diesel engine from Ram. 2020 marks the first time the latest-generation Wrangler is available with a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine. The engine under the hood of the Wrangler is mechanically the same as on the Ram pickups, but in this case, it’s been altered to help the off-road-oriented Wrangler maintain its hardcore capabilities. Upgrading the model to diesel is a significant improvement for the Wrangler model, here are five things to know about the 2020 Jeep Wrangler EcoDiesel:

Improvements to the vehicle’s off-road performance are of the utmost importance when the brand makes any changes to its iconic model. Given that the EcoDiesel is a torque-heavy engine, it makes perfect sense for it to rest under the hood of the Wrangler. Speed and handling aren’t the focus here, as off-roading is much more about torque, low-end power, and precision. For a vehicle to be a competent off-road ride, it needs a hefty amount of torque, and the EcoDiesel engine gives the Wrangler 442 lb-ft of torque to be exact. Although the EcoDiesel does add extra torque, the towing capacity remains the same at 3,500 pounds.

Clunky, rough diesel engines are a thing of the past — the Wrangler offers buyers a smooth ride and gives little indication that it’s a diesel engine under the hood. Thanks to the refined modern engine, acceleration is smooth, while shifts from the eight-speed automatic transmission are timely and work to keep the engine at a level where it produces optimum power. While on the move, the EcoDiesel Wrangler is also quiet and compliant. Owners in colder climates will notice a loud diesel start as the vehicle warms up, but once the Wrangler is warmed up, the idle noise calms down.

Perhaps the best perk of this Wrangler isn’t only the new EcoDiesel engine, it’s also got the benefit that Jeep has been hard at work making it a comfortable and usable vehicle. Creature comforts, such as power windows and door locks, a premium sound system, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats and advanced safety features, are available throughout the Wrangler trims, especially the Sahara and Rubicon trims. The Wrangler is officially more comfortable and more luxurious than ever before.

Just because the model is a hardcore off-roader, that doesn’t mean that it’s lacking in the tech and safety departments. Jeep, as part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), benefits from the automaker’s excellent Uconnect infotainment system. An optional 8.4-inch touchscreen display is the perfect vessel to pair with the Uconnect system as it includes hands-free Bluetooth connectivity, Google Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay.  The Wrangler can be outfitted with all the latest tech with options packages offered by Jeep. There’s the Safety Group Package ($995) which includes Rear Cross-Traffic Alerts, a Rear Parking Sensor System, and Blind-Spot Monitoring, while the Advanced Safety Group Package (an additional $795) adds Automatic High-Beam Headlights, Adaptive Cruise Control, Advanced Braking Assist, and Full Speed Forward Collision Warning.

Overall, a diesel engine is the perfect addition to the Wrangler lineup. Not only is it well-suited for the tasks that make a Jeep Wrangler special, but it also adds more versatility to the vehicle, thus allowing for even more personalization. Jeep’s ongoing dedication to refining its comfort and technology features also make it the most advanced off-road-oriented vehicle the automaker has produced yet.
