How the 2024 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Rises Above the Rest
The Jeep Wrangler, an iconic off-road vehicle, holds a cherished place in the hearts of enthusiasts. Originally inspired by the military’s Willys Jeeps, this rugged and versatile convertible SUV has transformed from its rough-and-tumble past into the sophisticated Jeep Wrangler we know today. Its enduring popularity is evident, with Jeep proudly declaring in 2023 that over 5 million Wranglers have been sold since its introduction.
For 2024, the Jeep Wrangler boasts seven trims: Sport, Sport S, Willys, Rubicon, Rubicon X, Rubicon 392, and Sahara. Additionally, the plug-in hybrid 4xe version offers six trims: Willys, Sport S, Rubicon, Rubicon X, High Altitude, and Sahara.
The designation “Rubicon” draws inspiration from the challenging Rubicon Trail in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Consequently, the Rubicon trims of both the Wrangler and Wrangler 4xe stand out as the most off-road-oriented within the entire lineup. Perfect for drivers prioritizing off-road adventures over casual dirt trails, any of the Rubicon variants is well-equipped to navigate through challenging terrain.
Interior Design
Crafted with the outdoors in mind, the Jeep Wrangler features interior elements designed for durability, particularly the plastics and electronics that are resistant to water. While it may not boast the luxurious interiors found in SUVs from high-end brands at a similar price point, the Wrangler’s interior stands resilient, especially when the doors are off and the convertible top is down. Despite the firmness of the plastics, the overall fit and appearance are commendable, providing a rugged yet aesthetically pleasing environment.
Cargo Space
The Wrangler Rubicon with two doors may have the smallest cargo space, but it remains surprisingly roomy for its compact size. When the rear seats are in their upright position, it offers 12.9 cubic feet of cargo space, expanding to 31.7 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded. In contrast, the four-door model provides 31.7 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up and an impressive 72.4 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded.
Powertrain Prowess
The Wrangler Rubicon and Rubicon X offer a choice of powertrains. Buyers can opt for a 3.6-liter V6 delivering 285 horsepower, available with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. Alternatively, there’s a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder generating 270 horsepower, exclusively paired with an eight-speed automatic. For the top-of-the-line Rubicon 392, a robust 6.4-liter V8 powers it with an impressive 470 horsepower, also coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission. In the 4xe variants of the Rubicon and Rubicon X, a combination of a four-cylinder turbo engine and a rear-mounted electric motor works in tandem, producing a total output of 375 horsepower. The electric motor draws power from a 17.3 kWh battery, and like the other models, it is equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Off-Roading
While the standard Jeep Wrangler excels off-road, the Rubicon trims elevate it to extraordinary levels. Featuring enhancements such as 17-inch wheels with robust all-terrain tires, they share a common 4:1 heavy-duty off-road part-time 4WD system (except for the Rubicon 392, which boasts full-time 4WD) and heavy-duty shocks. The Rubicon and Rubicon X are equipped to navigate slow-speed technical rock crawling trails, a feat that many crossovers would struggle to replicate.
