Jeep Cherokee v Jeep Grand Cherokee: A Battle of Driving Needs

October 18th, 2023 by

While they bear the same name, the Jeep Cherokee and the Jeep Grand Cherokee are significantly distinct vehicles. Both models vary in size, target demographics, price points, and the former (Jeep Cherokee) is notably much older than the latter. However, due to their shared name, buyers can sometimes confuse the two. This is where we step in to clarify the primary distinctions between these two SUVs, despite their well-known nameplates.

Jeep Cherokee v. Grand Cherokee: Size & Cargo

The most noticeable distinction is their size. The Cherokee is smaller at 183″ long, 73″ wide, and 66″ tall, with 25.8 cubic feet of cargo space. In contrast, the Grand Cherokee is larger at 193.5″ long, 78″ wide, and 71″ tall, offering 37.7 cubic feet of cargo space. The Grand Cherokee’s longer wheelbase (116.6″) accommodates a third-row and more second-row space. For even more room, the Grand Cherokee L extends to 205″ in length and a 121.7″ wheelbase, providing extra cargo and third-row space (46.9 cubic feet).

Jeep Cherokee v. Grand Cherokee: Pricing

Price is a significant contrast between the two. The Grand Cherokee, besides being newer, exudes a premium ambiance with an upgraded interior, cutting-edge Jeep technology, and a modern platform. The 2023 Cherokee starts at $39,290 for the Altitude Lux base model, with the Trailhawk trim starting at $42,890 (plus destination fee/2024 pricing pending). Meanwhile, the 2024 Grand Cherokee starts at $38,290 (plus destination fee), offering a seemingly better deal than its smaller counterpart. However, the budget-friendly Laredo A trim, with fewer tech and safety features and limited options, comes in white only and is less popular among customers.

Jeep Cherokee v. Grand Cherokee: Powertrains and More

Both Jeep models offer different engine choices. The Cherokee has a 2.4L four-cylinder with 180 hp and a turbocharged 2.0L with 270 hp, both with four-wheel drive. In contrast, the Grand Cherokee provides more engine options with higher power. The base is a 3.6L V6 with 293 hp, while a 2.0L four-cylinder plug-in hybrid, the 4xe, delivers 375 hp and 25 miles of electric-only driving. The 4xe serves as a hybrid compromise between a full electric vehicle and a conventional internal combustion engine.

The extended Grand Cherokee L also offers a V8, producing 357 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque, with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Opting for the V8 necessitates the use of Jeep’s four-wheel-drive system. Jeep offers various 4×4 systems, including Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II (with low-range gearing), and Quadra-Drive II (with automatic high-range 4WD). Properly equipped, the towing capacity varies:

  • Jeep Cherokee: 2,000 pounds
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee: 6,200 pounds
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee L: 7,200 pounds
