Stellantis, the corporate powerhouse overseeing brands such as Jeep, Ram, Dodge, and eleven others, is set to introduce a range of cost-effective electric vehicles in 2024. The company’s goal is to make electric models more affordable, positioning itself to compete with established leaders in the industry like Tesla, as well as emerging Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers.

Shortly after revealing its substantial $1.6 billion investment in the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Leapmotor, Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep, unveiled its intentions to introduce an economical electric vehicle brand. In collaboration with Leapmotor through a fresh joint venture, Stellantis intends to target cost-conscious consumers who prioritize cutting-edge technology in their products, as outlined by CFO Natalie Knight during the company’s Q3 earnings call.

Stellantis is securing an approximate 20 percent ownership stake in Leapmotor with the aim of harnessing its electric vehicle technology to provide “budget-friendly mobility options to a worldwide clientele.” According to Knight, the upcoming electric car venture will debut in Europe, with plans for subsequent expansion into other international markets. Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep, will retain a 51 percent majority ownership in this new electric vehicle brand, aligning with its objective of meeting the Dare Forward 2030 targets through an economically sustainable ecosystem.

Affordable EVs Coming in 2024

Stellantis has described the upcoming EV brand as “complementary” to its existing technology and product lineup. This 15th brand will introduce an additional facet to Stellantis’ diverse portfolio, positioning the company for competition in the electric vehicle era. Knight emphasized that the new venture will entice customers with affordable electric vehicles and cutting-edge technological features. In fact, the company’s CFO expressed eagerness to gain insights from a prominent Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer.

This partnership will provide Stellantis with valuable insights into the benchmark for excellence. It will enable Stellantis to gain a deeper understanding of the forefront of the electric vehicle market and the pricing differentials between Chinese and Western automakers. Knight further emphasized that while market dynamics will follow their own course, Stellantis is prioritizing rapid adaptation and flexibility to establish itself as a frontrunner in the electric vehicle sector.

Stellantis unveiled its Q3 earnings report, revealing a remarkable 37 percent surge in global electric vehicle (EV) sales. This notable growth was primarily driven by the strong performance of new models such as the Jeep Avenger, Citroen Ami, Peugeot E-208, and Fiat New 500e.

The manufacturer’s inaugural lineup of all-electric vehicles is set to debut in the United States in the coming year (2024), marking the introduction of the first electric models from both Jeep and Ram. The Ram 1500 REV electric truck, along with the Jeep Recon and Wagoneer S, is slated for a U.S. market launch next year (2024).
