WardsAuto Names Pacifica’s Hybrid to List of 10 Best Engines
WardsAuto has awarded the Chrysler Pacifica with several awards this year and recently, they named Pacifica Hybrid’s engine on their list of 10 Best Engines for 2017.
To create the most-fuel efficient minivan and the only PHEV minivan, Chrysler modified the engine in the non-hybrid Pacifica to maximize efficiency and to make it compatible with the Pacifica Hybrid’s two electric motors and lithium-ion battery.
“FCA’s powertrain engineers did all the hard work to make the first plug-in hybrid minivan a success,” says WardsAuto Senior Content Director Drew Winter. “They not only reworked the V-6 engine for a hybrid application, but undertook in-house development of an innovative transmission capable of effectively coordinating power from two electric motors and the gasoline engine.”
Unlike the non-hybrid engine, the Pacifica Hybrid’s 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine runs on an Atkinson Combustion cycle, which is popular among hybrids as it replaces the traditional four-stroke engine process with a more fuel efficient process. Additionally, the power is transferred to the vehicle’s wheels by an electrically variable transmission, called eFlite. This specially designed transmission directs power from vehicle’s engine and motors without a noticeable feel of the transfer of power.
All of the careful engineering has resulted in the Pacifica Hybrid’s electric range of 33 miles, hybrid range of 84 MPGe combined city/highway and total hybrid range of 566 miles. These numbers are not only better than any other minivan, but they are truly revolutionary in the minivan segment. Go, Chrysler!
