The automotive industry is undergoing a significant transformation towards electric vehicles, and this shift necessitates that many beloved automotive legends adapt to an electrified future in order to remain relevant. Among these iconic vehicles is the Jeep Wrangler, a model that has already ventured into electrification with the plug-in hybrid Wrangler 4xe. However, transitioning to a fully electric platform will demand more extensive modifications, and this transformation may require a bit more time to execute. Here is the current information available regarding the upcoming Jeep Wrangler EV.

Jeep Wrangler Electric Concepts

Jeep unveiled a range of electric Wrangler Magneto concepts during Easter Jeep Safari, with the latest being the Magneto 3.0 boasting 650 horsepower and 900 lb-ft of torque. These concepts featured imposing 40-inch tires and, surprisingly, adhered to the traditional two-door layout equipped with a manual transmission. While a production version of the Wrangler EV will likely be more practical and marketable, Jeep’s message seems to emphasize that the forthcoming Wrangler EV will stay true to the Wrangler’s essence and won’t be a half-hearted effort.

Off-Road Capabilities

Jeep CEO Christian Meunier revealed to AutoExpress that the next-generation Wrangler would be the brand’s most capable Wrangler to date. “The Trail Rating is a scale up to 10. With the next-generation Wrangler we want to push the Trail Rating to 12. Electrification doesn’t prevent us from doing anything when it comes to off-roading,” Meunier said.

Next-Generation Wrangler

According to the same AutoExpress source, the upcoming Wrangler generation is expected to go fully electric. Nevertheless, it’s important to note that Jeep has made divergent commitments for different regions. In Europe, the brand aims to achieve complete electrification, with a target of 100 percent electric vehicles (EVs) by 2030. Meanwhile, in the United States, Jeep’s plan is less aggressive, aiming for 50 percent EVs. As a result, it’s reasonable to anticipate the coexistence of a hybrid 4xe or even a traditional combustion engine Wrangler alongside the electric version for a certain period.

2027 Debut

Jeep has not disclosed a specific launch date for the electric Wrangler, and it doesn’t appear to be on the immediate horizon. The release of the Recon and electric Wagoneer SUVs, initially slated for this year, is still pending. Additionally, Jeep recently introduced a mid-cycle refresh for the current-generation Wrangler in 2024. The electric Wrangler might potentially debut in 2027.

2024 Jeep Wrangler

Jeep unveiled its 2024 Jeep Wrangler model, extending the iconic vehicle’s lineage as the most capable and recognized vehicle across the globe. Building on its legendary history, the 2024 Jeep Wrangler remains authentic thanks to its advanced powertrains, superior on- and off-road dynamics, advanced safety tech features, and recognizable Jeep design. Buyers can expect even greater capability from the 2024 Wrangler as the lineup expands to include new technology, advanced safety features, all while staying true to its Wrangler nature without compromising the freedom to go anywhere and do anything. Jeep expands the Wrangler’s capabilities thanks to its first full-float Dana rear axle, an available 100:1 crawl ratio, increased 5,000-pound tow capacity, and a new factory Warn winch. As for the interior cabin, buyers can expect more comfort and safety, a standard 12.3-inch Uconnect  5 touchscreen infotainment display, standard side curtain airbags in the first and second rows, and available power front seats.
