When it Comes to Off-road 4×4 Systems, Jeep Knows Best

June 22nd, 2021 by

The entire Jeep lineup offers buyers the best when it comes to 4×4 systems to engage while venturing off-road. That being said, Jeep doesn’t just provide some generic variant of all-wheel-drive or 4×4 prowess. Some systems are exclusive to a model, while others are available to all models across the lineup. Want to learn more about the 4×4 systems and the Jeep vehicles they’re featured on? Check out our detailed breakdown below.

Active Drive Systems

Jeep offers several Active Drive 4×4 systems, and they’re available on the following 4×4 models: Jeep Renegade, Jeep Compass, and Jeep Cherokee. The Jeep Renegade and the Jeep Compass models come with the same Active Drive 4×4 Systems, while the Jeep Cherokee features its own Active Drive System. The Active Drive 4×4 System gracefully shifts from four-wheel-drive to front-wheel-drive, instantly making all models equipped with Active Drive 4×4 more efficient whether in the city or off the beaten path. Both the Renegade Trailhawk and Compass Trailhawk models come with an additional 4×4 system complete with Selec Terrain Traction Management. This system allows vehicles to adapt to different terrain on the go. Specifically engineered to conquer roads off the beaten path, the Trailhawk trims mentioned above also feature an Active Drive Low 4×4 System – a system more advanced than the basic Active Drive. Unique settings on Trailhawk trims offer a 20:1 crawl ratio for those looking to conquer rocky terrain.

As for the Jeep Cherokee, the model is sold with various Active Drive Systems, including Active Drive I, II, and Lock 4×4. Active Drive I comes with a system that automatically engages four-wheel-drive when the terrain demands it. Active Drive I also monitors the wheel slippage and applies torque to specific wheels when the vehicle needs it. Active Drive II has all the same perks as Active Drive I, plus a bonus Low Mode setting so that Jeepers can enjoy extra low-speed traction. Additionally, the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk model features a standard Active Drive Lock system complete with a mechanical rear axle lock and the exclusive Selec-Terrain Rock mode.

Command-Trac & Rock-Trac Systems

Specifically engineered to be paired with the Jeep Wrangler and all-new Jeep Gladiator, the Command-Trac and Rock-Trac systems all feature a transfer case to help protect the Wrangler’s most crucial equipment from damage while out on the trails. The Rock-Trac system is exclusive to the Wrangler Rubicon and Gladiator Rubicon trims as it offers additional torque at a 4:1 gear ratio. Jeepers looking to go rock crawling will feel powerful with this 4×4 system, no matter how rough the terrain.

Quadra-Trac Systems

The Jeep Grand Cherokee — and soon-to-be Grand Cherokee L– offers numerous Quadra-Drive/Trac systems at the top of the lineup. There’s the Quadra-Drive II 4×4 system, Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Trac SRT systems. Available Quadra-Drive II features a full-time active 4×4 system and a rear electronic limited-slip differential. The Quadra-Trac I system features a standard brake lock differential and all-weather capability instead. The Quadra-Trac II system comes with the same features, but is also paired with the Selec-Terrain system and has a bonus two-speed low transfer case as well. Top-tier SRT trims, such as the Grand Cherokee SRT Trackhawk, come standard with the Quadra-Trac SRT system – a full-time 4×4 system with the ability to send 100 percent of the torque to a single wheel in case of emergency. It features a single-speed transfer case and the Selec-Trac system with six modes: Track Sport, Snow, Tow, Auto, and Custom.
